This week for Caïa

She's about to discover her hands.

Week 13 is when the fist unclenches and the hand-to-mouth reflex gives way to deliberate reach. Watch for it.

The unclenched fist.

Caïa is 90 days old today.
For Caïa specifically

Your fussy late-afternoons may be ending soon.

You mentioned Caïa is fussy between 4pm and 7pm. This is the tail end of the peak-of-fussiness curve that typically crests at week 6–8 and resolves around week 12–14. Her longer night stretches (you logged a 6h one yesterday) are an early signal the curve is breaking in your favour.

Watch for this week

The hand discovery moment.

Because you told us she's already tracking faces across the room, her visual system is ahead of where most week-13 guidance assumes. That often means she'll discover her hands a few days early. Watch for her bringing her fists together at the midline — the photo moment of this week.

What's universally happening at week 13

Most babies this week begin to:

  • Bring hands together at the midline
  • Hold a small object briefly when placed in palm
  • Laugh aloud for the first time (some do)
  • Lift head 45–90° during tummy time
  • Stretch night sleep to 5–6 hours

Gentle red flags

Speak to your paediatrician if by end of week 14 Caïa still does not:

  • Respond to loud sounds
  • Follow moving objects with her eyes
  • Smile at people
  • Bring her hands together

What might change next week

Week 14 often brings the first real laugh. Many babies this week start to develop a 4-month sleep regression — night wakings returning briefly as sleep cycles mature. It passes.

Cradle cap — shampoo or leave it?

Opened 3h ago · 2 messages

"Caïa has had cradle cap for two weeks. Should I be using the pharmacy shampoo the ONE nurse suggested, or just leave it?"
You · 3h ago
Dr Sophie Laurent · Paediatrician
Cradle cap at 13 weeks is extremely common and nearly always resolves on its own by 6 months. The pharmacy shampoo is fine if it's the mild one ONE typically recommends. Avoid picking. A dab of almond oil 20 minutes before the bath softens the flakes — gentler than shampoo alone.
